The UK NHS

Carbon emission scope

  • Carbon emissions are categorized into three scopes (1, 2, and 3) to understand and manage greenhouse gas emissions across an organization's entire value chain.
  • Scope 1 covers direct emissions from owned or controlled sources, like fuel combustion.
  • Scope 2 includes indirect emissions from purchased electricity, steam, heating, or cooling.
  • Scope 3 encompasses all other indirect emissions, including upstream and downstream activities in the value chain.

The NHS has set two net zero targets*

  1. For the emissions we control directly (the NHS Carbon Footprint), we will reach net zero by 2040, with an ambition to reach an 80% reduction by 2028 to 2032.
  2. For the emissions we can influence (our NHS Carbon Footprint Plus), we will reach net zero by 2045, with an ambition to reach an 80% reduction by 2036 to 2039.
  • There are already (and these will only increase) incentives for companies “selling” into the NHS
  • All NHS procurements include a minimum 10% net zero and social value weighting
  • For all new contracts above £5 million per annum, the NHS requires suppliers to publish a Carbon Reduction Plan for their UK  scope 1 and 2 emissions and a subset of scope 3 emissions as a minimum

  • Our homes are 100% renewable energy
  • We are fully digital, paper-free

  • When we meet people face-to-face, we will travel by electric car or, if not possible, we will carbon offset the journey
  • We will attend relevant congresses, but we will carbon offset travel, accommodation etc and our presence will be very high profile due to unique elements (minimal equipment, trees / recyclable furniture)
  • We will work with our partners to ultimately achieve zero emissions in scope 3
